Two new visible security features were introduced to the Series 1990 through Series 1995. $1 and $2 banknotes did not receive these additions as the U.S. Treasury did not believe the low denominations were a counterfeiting concern. The first security feature was a security thread was embedded into the substrate for the $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills each with a different location. According to the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, when the notes are held to ultraviolet light they glow different colors; $5-blue, $10-orange, $20-green, $50-yellow, and the $100-pink. The second security feature was microprinting added to the upper half on the left and right sides of the center portrait. The text repeats "The United States of America". When viewed from arms length the microprinting appears to be a second border line. These were added to the Series 1990, 1993 and 1995 Federal Reserve Notes.
Note: It's worth mentioning that the Bank of England was the first country to embed security threads into banknotes beginning in 1948 forty two years before the U.S.
I have included a Series 1995 $1 (Error Note) & $2 to "complete the issue" for the time period.
