On October 9, 2003 the Bureau of Engraving & Printing issued newly redesigned paper money with the $20 bill. It was the first time since the U.S. Federal Government began issuing paper money in 1862 that U.S. currency featured background colors other than black and green, Different colors are used for each denomination $5-light purple, $10-yellow, $20-green, $50-red & Blue, and the $100 Blue/Gray & Green. The portraits were enlarged and removed from their traditional oval borders. The only additional security feature added were Omron rings. A geometric pattern of small circles integrated on both the face and backs. These patterns function as an anti-counterfeiting measure to prevent money from being copied or scanned on standard printers or scanners. Different patriotic emblems were incorporated into the face designs of every note.
Note: The $1 and $2 notes were deliberately excluded from this redesign because their unprofitably to counterfeit. Furthermore, and thanks to the Vending Machine Lobby, Section 116 of the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Act specifically prohibits the redesign of the $1 note.I have included a Series 2021 $1 and 2013 $2 to "complete the issue" for the time period.
