The Series 1928 A & B Federal Bank Seal, for Federal Reserve Notes (FRN), was changed from a Numeric Federal Reserve District seal beginning in September of 1929 during the transition from Series 1928A & 1928B to a letter representing the individual Federal Reserve Bank District . The "Alpha" name comes from the Seal changing from a number to a letter Code; A-Boston, B-New York, etc. for all 12 Federal Reserve Banks. It is rumored the change was due to confusion with the numbers being confused with the bank note denomination and/or initial inconsistent design logic not 100% established by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The "Alpha" denominations were produced and issued for the Series 1928 A, B, C, and D for the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 FRNs. Not all suffix letters (A.B.C, etc.) were issued for every denomination and Federal Reserve District. The Alpha Federal Reserve seal was discontinued with the release of the Monochrome Series but still remains with the unchanged design of the $1 and $2 bills.
