My Obsolete Bank Note Collection represents 49 of the 50 states, sorry Alaska you're a tough state! Most of my bank notes are what I believe we all picture as "traditional obsoletes". Obsoletes are a broader currency name for Bank Notes and Scrip issued between 1782 and the late 1860s that were not Federal issues. There are several sub-categories of Obsoletes that include Depression & Panic Scrip, Postal Notes, and Merchant Currency. In other words paper issued by non government entities that acted as a circulating currency. The beginning of the end of the Obsolete Bank Note era came to an end by 1862 with the introduction of U.S. Federal currency. But Obsoletes, especially Scrip, were produced into the 1930s and beyond such as my 1980 New Mexico Airport Revenue Bond. Because the Obsolete Era ended in the 1860s the geographic area (and states) was greatly limited to east of the Mississippi River. West of the Mississippi traditional obsolete bank notes are rare and with that comes a higher cost so you'll see more Scrip in my collection for the western states. Within my "U.S. State" collection i have a sub-collection of the 17 U.S. Presidents that appeared on Obsolete Bank Notes denoted by the Seal of the President of the United States.
